Beraghvale celebrates racial diversity
Last week, families from the Beraghvale area of Derry~Londonderry came together to mark International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination 2024 with an afterschool event celebrating diversity.
Held in partnership with Radius Housing, the event in Glenabbey Community Hub allowed local families to take part in arts and crafts and taste foods from different parts of the world. Deirdre McLaughlin from Libraries NI also led storytelling and demonstrated books for children that showcase the theme of diversity.

UN International Day of Elimination of Racial Discrimination calls on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.
Mieke Hegarty, Tenant Engagement Officer, explained:
This afterschool event brought children from all ages and their parents together to talk about diversity, find out more about other countries on the interactive globe and learn about how other people live and eat. There were foods from all over the world giving the opportunity for all kinds of new flavours and textures to try.
The children decorated different skin-coloured hands, and everyone got to draw their own hands and cut them out of foam to create a wreath, which now hangs proudly in the hub to remind everyone we are all different in our own way.”
