Let’s talk about scams
As part of Talk Money Week 2025, Apex is encouraging everyone to have open and honest conversations about money, including how to stay safe from scams.
Scams can happen to anyone, particularly when it comes to money, benefits or online messages. Talking openly about scams helps protect you, your friends and your community.
Common scams
Unfortunately, scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated. Some of the most common scams include:
- Benefit or social security scams
- Fake texts or emails claiming you are owed a payment or must update your details
- WhatsApp ‘friend in need’ scams, where messages pretend to be from a loved one asking for urgent money or help
- Banking or refund scams, which claim your account is blocked or offer fake energy rebates or tax refunds.
Remember, legitimate organisations will never ask for your bank details or passwords by text, email or social media.
Protect yourself from scams
There are simple ways to protect yourself and others.
- Take your time and don’t let anyone rush you.
- Avoid clicking on unexpected links or attachments.
- Never share personal or banking details.
- Report scam texts by forwarding them to 7726 for free.
- If in doubt, always talk to someone you trust before taking action.
