‘Green Shoots’ sprouting in Dungannon
A 10-week programme of sport, rolled out between April and June has just been completed with St Patrick’s Primary School, Gaelscoil Aodha Rua and Thomas Clarke GFC in Dungannon.
‘Green Shoots’ brought together pupils from the two local schools, both with a diverse mix of cultures. More than 100 children per session took part in structured Gaelic football lessons, delivered by qualified and experienced coaches from Thomas Clarke GFC in Dungannon. The sessions took place in the schools and at the club’s new community hub.
The programme aimed to encourage participating children to keep playing at the local community hub, where they and their families can also enjoy various courses and activities. The goal is to nurture these little ‘green shoots’, building on their fitness and teamwork skills.
‘Green Shoots’ in conjunction with Apex Housing Association and Choice Housing, was supported by the Department for Communities (DfC) and the Northern Ireland Housing Executive’s ‘Housing for All’ Shared Housing Programme. The Programme has its origins in the NI Executive Together: Building a United Community Strategy which reflects the Executive’s commitment to improving community relations and continuing the journey towards a more united and shared society.
A potential £12.6m will be invested by the housing associations in the area through shared housing developments at Fortview and Sycamore Drive, and their associated five-year good relations plans. A joint Dungannon Advisory Group has been established to support delivery of these plans.
Valerie Morrison, Apex Good Relations Officer, commented:
Dungannon is one of the most multi-cultural areas in Northern Ireland, and there is a real openness to finding out about other cultures and ways of life. This is one of a number of good relations projects we have delivered since Sycamore Drive was built, and we can see the positive impact on community relations due to the commitment and engagement of local groups with our advisory group and good relations events.
Cyril Moorhead, Communities Officer at Choice Housing, commented:
Through our shared housing programme we are thrilled to have brought these young people together for the ‘Green Shoots’ programme. Participation in sport is known to have a positive impact on both physical and mental health, one of the outcomes in our good relations plan.
Gareth Devine, School Liaison Officer at Dungannon Thomas Clarke GFC, commented:
It’s been fantastic bringing these children together to learn about local sports and cultures, whilst gaining new skills and improving their fitness.
Denise Johnston, Deputy Chair of Mid-Ulster Council, commented:
This initiative does more than introduce children to the excitement of local Gaelic games. It brings them together, helping them learn about teamwork, respect and different cultures. It’s about embracing inclusion, fostering friendships, and creating a sense of belonging that reaches beyond the sports field.
