Don’t Get Bitten by harmful money lenders this Christmas
Apex has joined partners across Derry~Londonderry to remind people to stay alert to high-interest loans and quick cash traps, as a new campaign launches to promote safer, more affordable ways to borrow and spend.
The ‘Don’t Get Bitten’ campaign has been launched across the city to raise awareness of the dangers of high-interest loans that can push individuals and families into serious debt.
Striking new billboards which will be displayed at Foyleside Shopping Centre, are urging people not to get caught out by harmful lenders and loan sharks, and to reach out early to local advice services if they’re struggling with money worries.

The campaign aims to tackle the growing problem of people turning to quick cash traps to cover rising household costs – a trend that spikes every year in the run-up to Christmas.
Hayley Canning, Apex Welfare Advice Officer, explains:
Christmas can be a particularly stressful time financially, with many families feeling pressure to spend more than they can afford. Through this year’s campaign, we’re reminding our tenants to plan their spending carefully and avoid turning to illegal or high-interest lenders. While quick loans may seem like a short-term fix, they can lead to serious financial problems later on.
We are here to offer support and guidance on safer, more affordable ways to manage money over the festive season.
This year’s campaign is being rolled out by the Foyle Network Foundation alongside Apex, Foyleside Shopping Centre, Skeoge Community Hub, Derry Credit Union, Pennyburn Credit Union, Waterside Credit Union, ASK Advice Services, Dove House and Community Restorative Justice (CRJ).
Together, we are encouraging people to choose safer, community-based alternatives to borrowing, and to speak up early if they need help managing bills or debt this winter.
Speaking after launching the campaign alongside Deputy Mayor Niree McMorris at Foyleside Shopping Centre, Karen Mullan, Director of the Foyle Network Foundation, said:
With Christmas approaching, many people feel pressure to spend more, and that’s when harmful lenders often step in and take advantage of people who are already struggling to make ends meet.
There are so many local services that can help with budgeting, benefits and affordable credit – all free and confidential. We would encourage people to get in touch with those if you are in need of help.
