Apex tenants have been cooking their way around the world during the last month through a cultural diversity cookery course organised as part of the Housing Associations Integration Project (HAIP). Participants were able to meet with tenants from other communities and jointly learn about culture and traditions from differing countries.
The HAIP seeks to improve cross community relations in social housing. It is a €1.1 million project supported by the European Union’s PEACE IV Programme, which is managed by the Special EU Programmes Body. Match funding for this project has been provided by the Executive Office in Northern Ireland and the Department for Rural and Community Development in Ireland.
The course, which was hosted in Apex Living Centre, showed participants how to cook a traditional meal from a different country every week – with curries and stroganoff being mastered during the course. Tutor, Ann Watson, also provided those cooking with facts about the traditions and cultures of each country and their diet to complement the cuisine each week.

The class enabled me to meet new people and I’ve really enjoyed learning new dishes.
Another participant, Ann Browne, said:
Although I could cook, I was not very imaginative so this course allowed me to be more adventurous.
The cultural diversity cookery course was delivered as part of HAIP non-accredited training courses that Apex is offering to tenants engaged on the project.
