Apex Housing Association (Apex) has launched its very first Sustainability Strategy outlining the organisation’s plans over the next three years to tackle the environmental impact of its work.
Introducing Apex’s sustainability vision; the new strategy outlines three key areas – Homes, Association and Communities; and sets out a series of ambitious targets and actions for the 2023-2026 period.
The strategy aims to help reduce fuel poverty; cut carbon emissions; improve biodiversity; limit resource use; support and motivate staff; deliver high quality, affordable homes and enhance community support.
Peter Caldwell, Chairperson of Apex, explains:
At Apex, we understand the importance of playing our part in the creation of a sustainable world. We provide affordable and safe homes, but we must also respond to wider issues of social inequality and climate change. This new strategy sets out our intentions to advance sustainability throughout the association; and in the communities we build and support.
Sheena McCallion, Chief Executive of Apex, comments:
We acknowledge that we are at the beginning of our sustainability journey. This strategy is an important first step. It sets out our plans for the next three-year period; focusing on key actions to make a real, measurable impact within our association and communities, as well as contributing to the achievement of government sustainability targets. This is only the beginning.
Barry Kerr, Apex’s Director of Development, who will play a key role in leading implementation of the strategy, comments:
We currently have almost 7,000 homes, with a further 1,750 homes in construction on 13 sites across Northern Ireland. Within this strategy, we are pledging our commitment to ensuring both existing homes and new developments are sustainable, affordable, energy efficient and safe for tenants and residents.
The implementation of Apex’s 2023-2026 Sustainability Strategy is expected to lay a strong foundation for an informed approach to effectively delivering on sustainability at Apex going forward.
