The House in the Wells, hostel accommodation

The House in the Wells offers accommodation for homeless men with addiction issues. The hostel has 24 hour support.

The model of support is one of harm reduction, whereby controlled drinking is permitted within the accommodation. Each resident, as part of their support planning process enters into an alcohol agreement with their support worker.

Accommodation and facilities

There are 14 single rooms in the main building along with 5 self-contained chalets for 2 persons sharing.

Communal areas comprise of two sitting rooms one with television, the other a quiet room, both with tea/coffee making facilities. A spacious dining room and large well equipped activities/hobbies room and a pool/darts room and also a well-equipped gym.

There is a computer room for residents with internet access.

There is an enclosed courtyard with raised beds for gardening projects. The hostel also has chickens which the residents look after.

All meals are freshly prepared daily by onsite cooks who also ensure that all tastes/diets are catered for. Home baking is available to all residents every day. The laundry room has two washing machines and tumble dryers with iron and ironing boards available.

The House in the Wells is located close to the city centre amenities and is within easy walking distance of Derry city centre and the main bus routes.

How to apply for this accommodation

To apply, applicants must complete an application form by:

  • contacting the House in the Wells directly or via another agency that you have involvement with. You can also ask a family member, the Housing Executive, a social worker, alcohol agency or anyone you feel can assist you to contact us on your behalf; or
  • presenting yourself in person at the House in the Wells during office hours.

Your details will be recorded for statistical purposes and an application pack will be forwarded to you (within 24 hours).

When your completed application form is received, we will contact you and arrange a suitable time to meet you.

We will contact the other agencies that you refer to in your application, so that we have as complete a picture of your needs as possible. This process may seem intrusive but is essential if we are to deliver an appropriate support package.

The assessment will be as informal as possible and we will ensure you feel comfortable.

At this stage you will be made aware of the outcome of your referral application and next steps to follow.
